Mukt Vihanga : Chinchya Teen Kanya (English: Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China) is a 1991 book by Jung Chang, a Chinese-born British writer. It tells the life stories of three generations of women in her family, from the early 20th century to the 1980s. The book was a bestseller and was translated into more than 30 languages. The book begins with the author's grandmother, who was born into a wealthy family in Sichuan Province in 1909. She was married at the age of 17 to a man she did not know, and they had two children together. However, her husband died in 1937 during the Second Sino-Japanese War, and she was left to raise her children alone. The author's mother was born in 1929 and was sent to a boarding school in Beijing. She was a brilliant student and excelled in her studies. However, she was also a rebellious spirit and was often in trouble with the school authorities. In 1949, she married the author's father, who was a high-ranking official in the Communist Party. The author was born in 1952 and grew up in a privileged household. She attended the best schools and had access to the best education that China had to offer. However, she also witnessed the dark side of the Communist regime, and she was eventually expelled from school for her political views. In 1978, the author was allowed to travel to Britain to study. She never returned to China, and she has lived in Britain ever since. Mukt Vihanga : Chinchya Teen Kanya is a powerful and moving story of three women who lived through some of the most turbulent and important events in Chinese history. It is a story of love, loss, courage, and survival.
